mix well
Madewell just posted this video featuring their "style muse" for their fall campaign, Solange Knowles. I was so happy when I saw the announcement on their Facebook page because I'm a big admirer of Solange's bold, colorful style and (as evidenced by my Pinterest) Madewell is one of my absolute favorite shops. It really is the perfect pairing. Check out the video for a sneak peek at Madewell's fall collection. I'm loving the polka dots, laid-back blues, and bright poppy reds.

carey mulligan
I've been a fan of Carey Mulligan since she starred in An Education, and I've been a fan of her style since she showed up to last year's Academy Awards in that Prada dress adorned with tiny metal forks, knives, and scissors. Seriously, that dress kind of blew my mind. She always chooses really fun and unexpected silhouettes, textures, prints, and colors. I love that she wears a lot of vintage-inspired styles, often with modern details (an architectural pleat here, an avant-garde print there). She always keeps it ladylike, but still interesting and youthful.
Also, Carey really reminds me of Edie Sedgwick with her blonde hair and dimples. She would've made a great on-screen Edie, don't you think?

the baxter
Just watched The Baxter, starring Michael Showalter and Michelle Williams. Really funny. I love Michelle's sweet, understated vintage style in the film.

pretty little basterd

What is it about French women? They're just so effortlessly cool and chic...and they have such good hair.
I've been smitten with Mélanie Laurent ever since I first laid eyes on her in Inglourious Basterds. I haven't had a girl crush this huge since Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise (another French girl - coincidence?). If you haven't seen Inglourious Basterds yet...well, why haven't you? Laurent glows in every single frame (even when she's covered in blood), but the first shot of her in that red dress at the beginning of the final act is the real "wow" moment. Tarantino has featured some badass female characters in his films, but Laurent's Shoshanna may very well be the most badass of them all. Inglourious Basterds is out on DVD today, so go out and rent it if you haven't seen it already.

Karen O

What's not to love about Karen O? The woman doesn't just have style, she is style. She has something about her - an inexpressible, unattainable air of cool - that allows her to do (and wear) things that mere mortals cannot. There is nothing she can't pull off. She's simply a goddess. A screaming, kicking, spitting, modern day goddess.

Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola looks so smart in black and white, so it's no wonder that she wears it all the time. It suits her. Everything about Sofia is just so effortlessly cool. She directs cool movies, designs cool clothes (her clothing brand Milk Fed), and of course she belongs to one of the coolest families on the planet. Her style is understated, but not bland. She knows what looks good on her and she always seems comfortable in the clothes she wears. Plus she's Marc Jacobs' muse, which automatically makes her a style icon in my book. Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel might possibly be the cutest girl on the planet. Even her name is cute! I love her sense of style. It's never trendy, always feminine and quirky with lots of little details and big patterns. She's always perfectly put together, but never looks like she's trying too hard. She has mastered the art of wearing vintage and still making it look totally fresh and modern. (originally posted on 10/10/2005)

Here's a more recent collage of Zooey's style. The girl loves her stockings! My personal favorites are the top and bottom left outfits. The black and white checkered dress looks even better up close and the blue (Marc Jacobs?) coat paired with plaid scarf and boots that she wore to this year's Sundance Film Festival is unbearably cute!
